ICT Accessibility Requirement study for People with Disabilities (PWDs)

PWDs represent a heterogeneous group of people consisting of people with sensory disabilities (i.e., having visual or hearing impairment or both); physically handicap; persons with cognitive and learning disabilities (mentally retarded); and Persons Affected by Leprosy. Accessibility concerns are, therefore, specific to the requirements and needs of individual disability.

ICT is as broad and diverse as disability itself and is best explained as the convergence of computing with communication and broadcasting technologies, encompassing a myriad of built-in or otherwise connected assistive devices. ICT accessibility for PWDs is about making the functionalities and contents of ICT products and services accessible to PWDs either through the universal design (design-for-all) approach or reasonable accommodation. But, for this to be accomplished there is a need to know what those segments of the society are in need of..

The present study is, therefore, an attempt to fill the gap concerning ICT accessibility requirements of PWDs in the context of Ethiopia.
