Ethiopic Keyboard Layout and Typeface Standard

Currently, there are different incompatible Keyboard layouts developed by different software developers, each with its own limitations. The lack of such standard at the national level has hindered the vendors of different operating systems from integrating built-in Keyboard layouts for the Ethiopic script. Such out-of-the-box localized Keyboard layouts are at present available for most of the scripts of the world. Similarly, there exists no standard for Ethiopic typefaces that facilitate the development of different applications such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) applications and Barcode Readers.

Recognizing the after mentioned problems, Ethiopian Information Communication Technology Development Agency (EICTDA) has developed Ethiopic keyboard layout and typeface Standard.

Information Exchange Standard

The ability of government organizations to share/exchange information and integrate information and business by use of common standards is critical for the achievement of e-Government goals. It provides the capability for any agency to join with other electronically using known and agreed approaches.

It is known that organizations cannot operate in isolation. They are dependent on each other and resource sharing is a must for survival. However, this co-operation needs some sort of conformity or standard, whether it is practiced nationally, regionally or internationally, depends on the availability of commonly agreed standards.

It is with this understanding that the Ethiopian government gave high priority for the Preparation of information exchange standard that will bind government agencies together.

Localization Standards for different Ethiopian languages

At present, the lack of appropriate standards for the Ethiopian languages has made it very difficult for national and international ICT solution providers to include localization facilities that are commonly available for other languages.

As part of the Ethiopian Government's ongoing efforts to promote the development of Information and Communications Technology in the country, Localization of ICT into different Local Languages and hence the need for the availability of appropriate national ICT standards has been identified as one of the top priority areas. Localization standards for Amharic, Afan oromo, Tigrigna, Afaraf and Somali languages include: Country ID, Language ID, Number Format, Currency Symbol, Measurement Units, Sort Order, and Date/Time representation among others.
